About Us

The Scooter School was founded in 1968 by Sally H. O’Connor who saw the need for a preschool that provided young children a joyful first experience. The traditions of the nursery school are being carried on by Janet O’Connor Jacaruso, the Director and daughter of Sally.

The preschools’ objective is to provide the social, emotional, physical and cognitive activities needed by every child, while building their self esteem.

Licensed by the State of Connecticut, the Scooter School only employs qualified and experienced staff.

While following the public school calendar, the school offers a creative and individualized program including parent conferences, socials, a fantastic playground and a 3 week summer camp program.

We would be delighted to have you visit a class by contacting us for an appointment.

Parents are always welcome visitors.

Testimonials

"From Day 1, when I left my firstborn in the hands of someone outside of family, I knew I selected the right preschool.  In the 5 years I have been involved with Scooter School, not once have I been concerned about my children’s safety, level of learning and development, or the proper level of attention being given to my children. The staff at Scooter School is there because of their passion for children. They have all been in the position of raising small children before and they bring real life experience to the table…which in my eyes, is more beneficial than textbook knowledge. They have compassion for parents and children because they’ve been through it before.

Scooter School’s traditional philosophy provides the opportunity for what is truly important – to let the kids be kids. Despite the social pressures we face as parents in our fast paced society, such as raising the smartest, most athletic or talented children, Scooter School keeps us all grounded, and able to focus on helping our children reach their individual potential at their own pace.  Their emphasis on free play while learning to share, cooperate, build confidence and make friends, creates a solid foundation on which their personalities will evolve. Being able to play independently and with others free of judgment, social or family pressures or even competition among siblings makes it easy for each child to feel special for 2-1/2 hours a day. Thanks Scooter School for initiating, nurturing and cultivating my children’s education."

"The decision to put our five year old son Ben in Scooter School’s Step Ahead program was one of the best decisions we ever made.  He was both nurtured and challenged by the outstanding team of teachers.  It was incredible to watch him develop such a love for learning.  During that year, we saw tremendous growth in his self confidence, independence, and in his interpersonal skills.  Now that he is in kindergarten the benefits of this program have become even more apparent.  Ben is one of the oldest in his class and he is socially, emotionally and physically ready to handle all that the kindergarten day presents to him."

"My son has a late December birthday so I had the choice to either send him to kindergarten or hold him back one year.  I was impressed that Scooter School had a program devoted just for children that met the age requirement to attend kindergarten, but gave them one more year of preschool. My son attended the 4-year old program at Scooter School and I choose to send him to the Step-Ahead Program. It was the best decision I ever made.  After attending the Step-Ahead program my son became so more social because his self-confidence and self-esteem had grown. My son is now flourishing at Darcey School and I thank all the teachers at Scooter School. All the teachers at Scooter School are professional, knowledgeable in early childhood development, loving and nurturing. You couldn’t ask for a better pre-school."
